2018 is right around the corner, and for most of us, that means New Year’s Resolutions are on the brain. For 2018, make a goal to tighten up your oral hygiene habits to make sure you have a mouth-healthy new year!

Brush: Make sure to brush your teeth for 2 full minutes, twice a day. Use short, tooth-wide strokes in a back-and-forth motion. Brush the inside, outside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Floss: Flossing is just as important as brushing. Make sure you floss every day for 2-3 minutes. It does not matter whether you floss before or after you brush, as long as it gets done. Use a single-filament floss to help prevent fraying; look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure you are getting a quality product. Don’t forget to floss behind the back molars!

Mouthwash: Some people choose to add mouthwash to their daily oral hygiene routines. If you decide to do this, great! Just a word of advice: choose a therapeutic mouthwash, rather than a cosmetic one. A cosmetic mouthwash freshens breath temporarily by masking the smell with artificial scents. Therapeutic mouthwash freshens breath by killing bacteria that cause halitosis in the first place.
